Sightseeing in Rethymno: What to see and where to go in the city!

What to visit in Rethymno:

The city of Rethymno, a small town that retains a strong medieval - Renaissance color.
The old but extremely well-preserved historic center is located beneath the walls of the Sleepless guard
the Venetian castle Fortezza.
The coastal zone of the Municipality of Rethymno with its very beautiful beach and crystal clear sea, the Venetian harbor,

and the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.
There are many attractions such as:
- the famous Loggia of Rethymnon
- The church of Our Lady of Angels
- The church of St. Francis
- the Fountain Rimondi,

- There are also many Turkish buildings, such as Neratzes mosque, the largest in town,
- the Kara Musa Pasha Mosque where the seat of Byzantine Antiquities and Turkish school.

The history of Rethymnon is built on the site of ancient Rithimna city.
Today, with a population less than 50,000 inhabitants is the smallest of the three other historic cities of Crete.
During the Venetian occupation of Rethymnon has played an important role as the Venetians have taken an intermediate station and an administrative center for ships traveling from Heraklion to Chania, which was the town of Rethymno.
The aristocratic old town of Rethymno is characterized by buildings dating from the 16th century with arched entrances, stone staircases, Byzantine and Greco-Roman ruins, the small Venetian harbor and the narrow streets.
Rethymnon is an ideal place for family holidays all year round or vacation with friends, it combines beautiful beaches with a breathtaking mountainous hinterland.
The excellent infrastructure is an ideal attraction for thousands of tourists every year who choose it as an ideal holiday destination. The Venetian castle Fortezza, near the old Venetian harbor and the old town in Rethymno:

The old town of Rethymno is stretching from the hill of Palaiokastro, which dominates the "Fortress" by the old Venetian port.
To the south, the city limits are located on the roads Dimakopoulou and Gerakaris street and in the square of the Unknown Soldier.
The Venetians took care to fortify this piece of land, which is a peninsula, with walls to protect the city one of the pirates and the other by the impending danger of Turkish attacks.
The city walls had three entrances: the first was the "Gate of the Sand" Square of the Unknown Soldier
The second and most important was the "Gate Guora» or "Megali Porta" (Big Door).
There was a third gate, where today is the Sochoras stadium.
Nowadays, not saved any part of the wall. Within this triangular area was developed in Rethymno
mid-16th to early 20th century.
Within these limits have survived hundreds of buildings in the Venetian and Turkish periods.
At the time of Venetian and Ottoman domination, the town of Rethymno, numbered from 6,000 to 10,000.
After the destruction of the city in 1571, Rethymno rebuilt from scratch. Hundreds of buildings, public and private, and impressive temples were built at that time, leaving the younger generations a priceless cultural heritage. The most impressive of these monuments are the three main roads of Rethymno Venetian: the strip, Arkadi Street (the main street was the Venetians) and tract Fokas (Long Alley).
These three roads of Rethymno, with the vertical streets on them remain unchanged from the time of Venetian rule.
So if someone goes back in time, could comfortably be placed in Rethymno in 16th century!

Making our walk in the streets of Rethymno, we find the great churches of the Venetian:
Basilica of St. Francis and the Church of the Virgin Santa Maria (now Conservatory), which the Turks turned it into a mosque by adding three impressive domes and a minaret with two balconies (Serefas).
Also impressive is the Lady of the Angels (Little Lady).
At the beginning of the road Arcadi, starting from the square of the Unknown Soldier, is the Mosque of Kara Musa Pasha,
built on the ruins of a church dedicated to Saint Barbara.
We also meet hundreds of buildings from the Venetian and the Turkish period and impressive door frames in Renaissance style.
Our attention will attract kiosks (sachnisia), which hang over our heads and we can see many of them in the narrow alleys of the old city.
Undoubtedly, the area which hosts the most remarkable monuments of the Venetian era in Rethymno is:
The Piazza (square) of the Venetians, where is today the famous Constantine Paleologos street. In this region we will find the Venetian Loggia, perhaps the oldest building in the city and the only public building that survived the disaster of 1571 and the fountain Rimondi ("tap"), acquired its present form in 1626.
With careful research, you will also find the few remnants of the clock tower, the only monument of this type, in Crete, which was demolished to build the road Arkadi.
After all, they will not be an exaggeration to say that the old town of Rethymno is a huge museum, whose exhibits are scattered throughout the area of the city and invite the visitor to observe and to admire.

The public library in Rethymnon
The public library is housed in the courtyard of the church of Santa Barbara since 1945.
The first large donation of books was in 1879, from the scholar Emmanuel Rethymnian Vivylaki and consisted of 700 volumes
of valuable publications. Also important was the offer of Educational Association of Rethymno.
Since 1953, is recognized as the Central Public Library Rethymno.
It is one of the richest regional libraries in Greece. She has more than 130,000 books,
and extensive newspaper archive. For many years the municipality in Rethymno is looking for suitable space for the relocation.
Wine Festival in Rethymno

Rethymno revives the oldest institution of the "Wine Festival" in a new identity and content.
In the last week of May, the Public Garden in our city hosts the "Celebration of Wine and Local Cretan Traditional Products.
A festival which aims to highlight and promote the brand winning, Cretan standard products starring, again the wine.
Visitors will have the opportunity to learn from the experts about how to manufacture products disposed of their properties and their high quality and also be entertained by the events organized by local artists and Cretan traditional dancing groups.
Most importantly, through this event will highlight the vibrant and healthy relations that the Cretans to Earth
and the fruits of which were for centuries the basis of our food culture
now known internationally for its beneficial properties on human health.
It will also highlight the interdependence of tourism with culture, tradition and gastronomy
and viewed as a single set of actions that certify the authenticity of Crete
and provide in the resident or visitor.

Rethymnon, as a part of Crete belongs to the Mediterranean climatic zone with a climate that is mild. The winter is mild and humid with enough rain and mountain snow in the areas of the country. Snowfall is rare in the lowlands, but quite common in mountains. Generally the weather and the atmosphere can be quite damp, depending on how close you are to the sea. During the summer the average temperature ranges between 25-30 degrees (Celsius). South of Rethymno, the temperature is higher and there are more sunny days during the summer months and during the winter.

Bali Beach
Bali beach is located in Bali village, 35 km away from Rethymno town.
This beach is a classic resort with high traffic and is fully organized with deckchairs, umbrellas, water sports, restaurants and cafes.
The sand is white and thin in some places while you come across the beach you can meet instead of sand, small pebbles.
Preveli beach
beach location is south of Rethymnon town.
Offers umbrellas and sun beds and a river that ends there, surrounded by palm trees.
Access by car or by boat from the Plakias village. It is certainly worths at least one visit.
Amoudi Beach
Located near the Damnoni beach, an ideal beach for gymnismo.
Only 30 minutes drive south of the (Rethyno) city ..
