Samaria or Samaria Gorge that took its name from the old church of Osias Marias (14th century) thats is in its way, is one of the main attractions not only in Chania but in all the Cretan island.
Every tourist or visitor of thiw blessed island haw heard for the beauty of Samaria gorge, that is the longest gorge in Europe with a length of 18 kilometres(!).

Samaria Gorge is in the west side of Crete island and starts
at Xyloskalo village (1227 m. above sea level) on the Omalos Plateau and runs down to the seaside village of Agia Roumeli on the south coast of Crete.

In case you want to explore it be prepare for a long walk with comfortable-athletic or hiking shoes.In the half way
of the gorge you will find the Samaria village that is abounded from the year 1962, when all the area was declared as a National Park.
Samaria village is a great opportunity to admire the local cretan architecture and get rest for a while.

In Samaria National Park you will find unique plant species (more than 450 kinds) and unique animals, all protected under international laws.

The Samaria's gorge is officially open from mid-April to the end of October with a cheap ticket but you can walk through only if th weather is good.
